Bakersfield Budget Battle

Bakersfield’s City Council is locked in a heated debate over a $926 million budget poised to reshape the city’s fiscal future, with major allocations to public works, safety, and infrastructure—but not everyone’s buying into the plan. Critics, including Councilman Gus Rivas and Supervisor Gary Theobald, are pushing back on spending priorities, demanding more focus on deficit defense and questioning the city’s transparency, especially amid allegations of mismanagement and a recent 12-month DHS surveillance probe. Residents like Amy Miller, a longtime council member, are voicing frustration over accountability gaps, while the finance director insists the budget is designed to build long-term resilience. With July 1 looming, the council’s vote could set the tone for how Bakersfield navigates both its financial and civic challenges for the next year.
