Bali Dry Season Bite: Reefs Hot, Tuna Working Current Lines

Around the island this afternoon the weather has been classic dry‑season stuff: light to moderate E–SE trade winds, mostly clear skies, humidity on the high side but not brutal, and only a slight chance of a passing shower along the Bukit and east coast. Air temps are hanging in the low 30s Celsius, sea surface temps sitting around 27–28°C. Sunrise came just after 6 in the morning, with sunset just before 6:30 in the evening, so we’ve got those tight tropical bite windows. The best action today lined up around the early morning high and the late‑afternoon push. Local tide tables for the Benoa and Serangan area show a decent predawn low rolling into a mid‑morning high, then dropping off before another late high. Those moving water periods have been key. Inshore, the reef edges off Sanur, Serangan, and Nusa Dua have been lively on the changes. Anglers drifting prawns and small strip baits over the rubble in 5–15 meters picked up a steady mix of **snapper**, **emperors**, and the odd **trevally**. Soft plastics in natural baitfish colors and 20–30 gram micro‑jigs worked with short, sharp hops produced well when the current picked up. Off the east side, boats working out of Padang Bai and Kusamba reported good **mahi‑mahi** and scattered **yellowfin** and **skipjack tuna** around current lines and floating debris. Trolling small to medium skirted lures in green, blue, and pink, plus diving minnows in the 10–15 cm range, has been the ticket. When birds started working, switching to casting metal jigs and stickbaits into the bust‑ups brought quick hookups. Around Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, the usual suspects showed up along the drop‑offs: **GTs**, **bluefin trevally**, and reef predators smashing bait when the tide turned. Heavy poppers in blue/white or black/purple and sinking stickbaits have been getting smashed at first light and again late afternoon. Between those peaks, downsizing to smaller metals and soft plastics kept the rods bending. Bottom fishers working deeper rubble and ledges in 30–60 meters, especially off the Bukit and south of Nusa Penida, brought in solid **red snapper**, **grouper**, and **reef cod**. Squid and fresh cut bait produced best, but slow‑pitch jigs in 80–150 grams, in gold, orange, and pink glow, outfished bait when the current allowed a vertical presentation. For those land‑based along the east coast and Canggu–Seminyak side, the beach gutters and rocky corners gave up some smaller trevally, dart, and assorted reef fish on fresh prawn, small mullet strips, and metals in the 10–20 gram range. Fish the low‑light periods and work along any obvious color changes or structure. Best lures right now: - Small to medium skirted trolling lures in bright baitfish patterns for mahi and tuna - 20–60 gram metal jigs and micro‑jigs for inshore reefs - Heavy poppers and stickbaits for GTs and big trevally - Slow‑pitch jigs 80–150 grams for deeper reef edges Best baits: - Fresh squid - Live or very fresh prawns - Small live baitfish where you can get them - Fresh cut strips of local pelagics A couple of hot spots to circle on the map: - The reef line and drop‑offs around **Nusa Penida’s north and east sides** for GTs, trevally, and pelagics on the tide changes. - The **inshore reefs off Serangan and Sanur** for mixed reef species and light‑tackle fun, especially around the morning and afternoon tide swings.
