Bali Fishing Report: East-Southeast Winds, Rising Tides, and Pelagic Action Around Nusa Penida

Around the island today we had light to moderate E–SE trade winds, mostly dry skies, and air temps hovering around the low 30s Celsius in the afternoon. Offshore stayed a bit choppy on the windward side, but the leeward south and southwest coasts were very fishable through the morning and late afternoon. Sun popped up just after 6 AM and ducked out a little after 6 PM, giving a nice long twilight on both ends. The better bite lined up with the early rising tide at first light and again on the late‑afternoon push. Tides along the southeast coast ran a medium range: a predawn low, building to a late‑morning high, falling through midday, then another good push toward sunset. That afternoon flood really switched on the inshore fish, especially where the current wrapped around reef corners and channel mouths. Offshore, the trolling guys working 10–30 km off Nusa Dua and down toward the drop‑off south of Nusa Penida raised scattered yellowfin and some solid skipjack, with the odd mahi showing on current lines. Small to medium skirted lures in pink‑and‑white or blue‑silver, plus slim diving minnows, got most of the hits. A few boats reported tuna in the 5–15 kg class, with some double‑ups when they crossed birds and flying fish. Closer in, around the reef edges from Sanur down to Jimbaran and over toward Padang Padang, the jigging and live‑bait crowd found decent action on trevally, mixed snappers, and the odd grouper. Metal jigs in the 20–60 g range in natural sardine, silver, or glow worked best when hopped just off the bottom on that incoming tide. Live sardines and small scad pinned on a light wire trace picked off the better‑quality fish. Surfcasters along the east coast found some queenfish and small GTs at first light, especially where the waves met deeper gutters. Small stickbaits, 10–20 g metal slugs, and white bucktail jigs did most of the damage. Bait fishers using fresh prawn and cut scad also picked up mixed reef species during the slower tide phases. Couple of hot spots to keep on your radar: • South of Nusa Dua, along the outer reef line and drop‑offs, has been holding bait and drawing in pelagics on the afternoon tide. Good for trolling skirts and working jigs when you mark fish mid‑water. • The channels around Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are pushing strong current and bait, great for jigging and live bait on trevally, snapper, and occasional dogtooth tuna when the tide is moving but not ripping too hard. Best bets right now: fish the change of light, aim for the start of the incoming tide, and match the bait. Clear water favors natural colors; if it clouds up, don’t be shy with a bit of flash or glow. Bring both metal and soft plastics in the 3–5 inch range, and always have a couple of small pink and blue skirted lures ready if you run wide. That’s the word from the water today.
