Directed by Barry Levinson, the film follows two charismatic bank robbers whose “sleepover bandits” tactic—kidnapping bank managers the night before a job—turns complicated when a runaway housewife falls for both of them. Powered by oddball chemistry, early-2000s quirk, and a mix of romance and caper hijinks, the film embodies the last gasp of star-driven studio comedies before the industry shifted dramatically. Despite its A-list cast and high-concept hook, Bandits slipped through the cultural cracks—too quirky for a mainstream hit and too glossy for cult status.
