Federico I Hohenstaufen (Waiblingen, 1122 circa – Saleph, 10 giugno 1190) – noto come il Barbarossa in Italia – è stato imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero e re d’Italia. Salì al trono di Germania il 4 marzo 1152, succedendo allo zio Corrado III, e fu incoronato imperatore nella primavera del 18 giugno 1155 a Pavia. Due anni dopo, il termine sacrum (“santo”) apparve per la prima volta in un documento in relazione al suo impero. Successivamente fu formalmente incoronato re di Borgogna, ad Arles, il 30 giugno 1178. Fu chiamato Barbarossa dalle città dell’Italia settentrionale che tentò di governare; in tedesco, era conosciuto come Kaiser Rotbart, che ha lo stesso significato.Il Professore Paolo Grillo racconta per Storiainpodcast come attraverso uno scontro con i Comuni dell’Italia settentrionale cercò di ripristinare l’Impero ottoniano. Un conflitto lungo, la cui fine venne stabilita dalla pace di Costanza del 1183, la quale concesse alle realtà comunali autonomia e primi segnali di libertà, al prezzo del riconoscimento della supremazia imperiale. Si disgregava così la centralità del potere dell’Impero e si facevano strada i Comuni come strutture territoriali organizzate. Paolo Grillo è Professore Ordinario di Storia Medievale presso l’Università degli Studi di Milano la Statale, redattore della rivista “Società e Storia” e autore di diverse opere, tra cui “Milano guelfa” e “Le guerre di Barbarossa.
