In which Mr. Slope, emboldened by champagne and the occasion, makes an unwelcome and ill-timed declaration of affection to Mrs. Bold, whose spirited refusal culminates in a genteel but striking rebuke. The scene closes with Mr. Slope left to nurse his wounded pride and ponder his position, whilst Mrs. Bold flees, troubled by the consequences of her own firmness.
