from The Professor

As an accounting professor, I constantly seek innovative ways to enhance my student's learning experience and keep them engaged with the subject matter. One fascinating development that has caught my attention is the increasing role of artificial intelligence and search engines in accounting. Inspired by research collaborations with Scott Dell and insightful group discussions with Richard, a recent video showcased a captivating showdown between three distinct platforms: Bard, Bing, and ChatGPT-4. They were all put to the test, tackling the same accounting question. Observing the performance of each platform, I couldn't help but reflect on the potential implications and applications of AI and search engines in accounting education. As educators, we must strive to adapt and incorporate these technologies into our teaching methodologies, ensuring our students are well-equipped for the rapidly evolving business landscape. The showdown results were intriguing, shedding light on the strengths and weaknesses of each platform. While Bard was fast, Bing demonstrated the power of search engines in providing quick and accurate information. ChatGPT-4, on the other hand, showcased the potential of AI in understanding context and delivering comprehensive answers. As we continue to explore integrating these platforms into my curriculum, I am excited about their possibilities for enhancing the learning experience, providing additional resources for students, and fostering a deeper understanding of accounting principles. Embracing these technologies will benefit students and ensure that we, as educators, remain at the forefront of our field.Dr. Mfon Akpan is an assistant professor of accounting at Methodist University.
