Barnaby Rudge Chapter 36

In which the restless Lord George Gordon, consumed by fervent zeal and weakness alike, confides in his cunning secretary Gashford about the growing strength and funds of his Protestant association, whilst revealing the depths of his anxious devotion to a cause he deems righteous. Meanwhile, Gashford pursues his own secret designs, distributing clandestine handbills to rally Protestant support, and quietly marvels at the unfolding events he helps to sow.
