Barney McCoy has been a Professor in the College of Journalism & Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 2005, teaching courses in broadcast journalism, media writing and social justice. He is also a prolific documentary producer, focusing most recently on military history documentaries. In this episode of KRNU's Campus Voices series, McCoy discussed the creation of his latest documentary "Running Towards The Fire: A War Correspondent's Story." The project focuses on coverage of the European front in World War II by journalists like Robert Reuben, a Reuters News correspondent from Omaha, Nebraska. Reuben was one of a handful of reporters that joined Army Airborne troops in parachuting behind enemy lines just hours before the D-Day amphibious assault on Normandy in 1944 and provided first-hand accounts of the liberation of France and the end of the war.
