Barriers | Jeremiah Lepasana | "Barrier #3: Obsession With Speed": Exodus 32.1-14
from City Chapel NYC
This past, we continued our series on Barriers to a Deeper-life with God in Exodus 32.1-14, by talking about Barrier #3: Obsession w/ Speed. We looked at the text by asking 1) how are we tempted to respond when God and his promises seem distant; 2) what does our response signal; 3) how can we be saved? In part 1, we saw that when things do not happen as quickly as we would like, we are tempted to either reject God out right in favor of a more proximate substitute that we "can wrap our arms around" or mix God in with another solution that resembles something we are more familiar with. Yet, in part 2, we argued that this is equivalent to God's people running to the safety and shackles of their former life in Egypt. And, their actions were nothing less than a rejection of their covenant with the LORD. In part 3, we saw that they were ultimately saved by an intercessor, Moses, that 1) did not minimize their failures, yet 2) remembered God's promises, 3) remembered God's power, and 4) bore the risk of their failure on himself. And, in Jesus(!) we see a greater intercession done on our behalf. Therefore, we are to follow in his way, and also become patient intercessors, standing in the gap for those around us.
