from Baseball and BBQ · host Len & Jeff

Baseball and BBQ Episode #131 features part 2 with Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and Erica Blaire, Winner of BBQ Brawl, Season 2. Bob Kendrick is president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, https://nlbm.com/ and was our very first podcast guest.  We are so glad to have this incredible storyteller back.  Part two includes lots of information and stories about Negro League players who were great, but may not be as well known.  We talk about two-way players and how the Negro Leagues had a few who were absolutely amazing.  Bob shares his thoughts and feelings on his friend, Buck O'Neil who has received the long-overdue honor of being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as other players who finally received their due and those should get in but have not.  Just when you think we are ending the conversation, we get started on the very successful "tipping your cap" idea, which went viral.  Part two also features additional talk about Bob's incredible podcast, Black Diamonds, and what listeners have to look forward to. Erica Blaire is a lawyer, sommelier, pitmaster, and the season two winner of BBQ Brawl on the Food Network.  In part two, we learn how Erica defeated pitmasters with many more years of experience.  We discuss her specialty dish, Lomo al Trapo which translates to Beef in a Towel; the cooking process burns the towel, but what emerges from the its ashes is a delicious hunk of meat.  She speaks about winning a Preserve the Pit fellowship from Kingsford Charcoal.  We speak to Erica about the barbecue community and how everyone supports each other.  There is behind-the-scenes information on BBQ Brawl and what it was like to receive guidance from Bobby Flay as well as the other show mentors and judges.  Erica tells about the experience of filming a show during the pandemic, the competition, and how she became the Master of 'Cue.  At one point in the discussion, Erica jokes about growing up and needing to cook with whatever is in the fridge, even if it is Spam, Lucky Charms, and mustard.  After speaking with Erica, we are convinced the resultant dish would be delicious.          Jeff shares a rant in between the two interviews, but Leonard cannot stop himself from chiming in and ranting along. We recommend you go to baseballbbq.com https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.
