Baz Luhrmann 'Elvis' and 'The Black Phone' premiere in theaters, plus 'Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe!'

from Streamed & Screened: Movie and TV Reviews and Interviews

The King is in the building! The assuredly bombastic new 'Elvis' directed by Baz Luhrmann is hitting theaters this weekend and we're pretty excited to see what that twelve (or was it ten) minute standing ovation was all about that it got at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Along the way, we scour the archives for some relevant Elvis content that will entertain, illuminate, and amaze, which we have linked below so as to edify. Also coming out this week is a new horror movie, "The Black Phone," starring Ethan Hawke as a serial killer whose previous victims are, from beyond the grave, trying to help free his current victim. We're predicting the movie is not entirely as it appears, but we've been burnt before, so who knows.  Also on tap is the latest Dr. Strange movie landing on Disney+, "Loot" on Apple TV+, a new Beavis and Butt-Head movie on Paramount+, and the premiere of Westworld's fourth season on HBO Max. More from Bruce Miller: Grammy winners like Jennifer Nettles help tell heroes' stories in 'American Anthems'  'Unbearable Weight' gives a slight nudge to Nicolas Cage's career Emma Thompson gets intimate in 'Good Luck to You, Leo Grande' 'Bob's Burgers' serves up tasty big-screen fare Jeff Bridges deals with his own mortality while making 'The Old Man' Movies in a Minute - “Jurassic World: Dominion” 'Jurassic World: Dominion' makes you regret there were dinosaurs  'Hacks,' season one, shows why Jean Smart is such a treasure Bob Dylan's music comments on Depression-era story Where to watch: Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (Hulu) Elvis (official site) The Black Phone (official site) Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (Disney+; June 22) Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe (Paramount+; June 23) Loot (Apple TV+; June 24) Would It Kill You to Laugh? Starring Kate Berlant & John Early (Peacock; June 24) Westworld, season 4 (HBO Max; June 26) Links to other fun stuff we talked about in this episode: "Siouxlanders still remember the day Elvis came to town" (Bruce Miller, Oct 13, 2014) "The Night Elvis Presley Stopped A Fight In Madison, Wisconsin" (Late Edition: Crime Beat Chronicles) Follow the show: Twitter: https://twitter.com/StreamdNScreend Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/streamedandscreened Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/StreamedAndScreened Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, an entertainment reporter for multiple decades who is now the editor of the Sioux City Journal, Jared McNett, a reporter for the Sioux City Journal, and Chris Lay, the podcast operations manager for Lee Enterprises.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
