Be a Hero: Ep 6 of Evolving Democracy

from Spiritual Geography Podcast · host Joni Miller, Ph.D. and Christy Johnson, Ph.D.

In this week’s Evolving Democracy livestream, Christy and I explored a question inspired by this week’s Spiritual Geography episode (link below): What makes someone a hero? When we think about villains, we often think about power, control, wealth, and self-interest. Heroes, by contrast, are motivated by something very different. They care about people. They act from love, community, and a commitment to something larger than themselves. The good news is that heroism doesn’t require a cape.Sometimes it’s speaking up when something feels wrong. Sometimes it’s supporting someone else’s work. Sometimes it’s offering encouragement, sharing a skill, showing up at a protest, volunteering, making a phone call, or simply helping another person feel seen. Often the actions that feel small to us become life-changing for someone else.We also talked about the power of community. Just as a cathedral’s flying buttresses strengthen and support the structure, we strengthen one another when we stand together. Democracy is not built by solitary heroes. It is built by ordinary people who support one another, lend their voices, and contribute whatever gifts they have to a shared purpose. One of the most important themes of the conversation was that there is no single “right” way to contribute. Not every volunteer opportunity or form of activism will be a fit for every person. Part of the journey is discovering where your own gifts, passions, and energy naturally meet the needs of the moment. Keep trying things. Keep learning. Keep showing up.The future we want is not built by a few extraordinary people. It is built by millions of ordinary people choosing, again and again, to put love into action. When enough people do that together, the world changes.Joni Miller, Ph.D., is a writer, researcher, spiritual coach, and speaker who uses her knowledge, education, and love of all things spiritual to help spiritual wanderers find a place they can call home, navigating by the light of Love. www.SpiritualGeography.net Get full access to Spiritual Geography at jonimiller.substack.com/subscribe
