Be Still and Know That I Am God | Psalms 40; 46 | Come Follow Me Sleep Meditation
from Come Follow Me Meditations · host Pondereth
Rest tonight in the quiet river running underneath everything that feels loud. A Come Follow Me sleep meditation for August 17–23, “The Lord Is My Shepherd” (Psalms 1–2; 8; 19–33; 40; 46). The Psalms were written by people who could not sleep either — people who were afraid, and waiting, and honest with God about both. Tonight we sit with three of them. The psalmist of Psalm 40 describes a pit and miry clay, the kind of ground that pulls you down slowly while you are still trying to stand, and then says the Lord inclined unto him and heard his cry, brought him up, and set his feet upon a rock. The sons of Korah describe a world coming apart — the mountains carried into the sea, the waters roaring — and right in the middle of it find a quiet river whose streams make glad the city of God, and the line the whole psalm walks toward: be still, and know that I am God. And in Psalm 27, a writer with enemies at the gate says the Lord is my light and my salvation, and asks for one thing only — to dwell in the house of the Lord. If you are carrying something unresolved into the dark tonight, you do not have to solve it before you sleep. Play this as you settle into bed and let God be God while you rest.
