Be The Good Kind

What kind of ground are we? That is the searching question at the heart of the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8:4-15, and it is one that cuts right to the core of our spiritual lives. Jesus describes four types of soil, and in doing so, he paints a vivid portrait of the different ways human hearts receive the Word of God. The hard, well-worn path represents a heart that has been trampled down by life, by pain, by habit, until the Word simply cannot take root. The rocky ground speaks to those of us who receive truth with genuine excitement but have never developed the deep roots needed to survive when trials and persecution come. The thorny, weedy soil pictures a heart that is genuinely growing but slowly being strangled by the cares, riches, and distractions of the world around it. And then there is the good soil, the heart that receives the Word, holds it fast with honesty and sincerity, and over time bears extraordinary fruit. What makes this parable so compelling is that Jesus is not just describing four types of people. He is describing four conditions any one of us can find ourselves in depending on the season of life we are walking through. The invitation is clear: we are always the soil, and the question is whether we are willing to do the hard work of preparation, of breaking up what has become hardened, clearing out what is shallow, and pulling up what is choking us, so that the Word of God can do in us everything it was designed to do.
