Rappelons brièvement que le jugement ne visait pas d’abord et prioritairement la communauté juive et que la pratique de la circoncision est commune au judaïsme et à l’islam. Cette polémique récente est l’occasion d’un retour sur le sens de cette pratique inscrite depuis des temps immémoriaux dans l’histoire du peuple juif. Elle apparaît comme le symptôme d’une difficulté moderne à saisir le sens d’un rituel qui trouve son origine dans le texte de la Thora et qui est l’expression de l’inscription dans la généalogie juive et de la soumission à l’injonction divine faite à Abraham.
