Become as I Am (Galatians 4:12)

from Wrestling with Theology · host Rev. Doug Minton

"Brothers, I entreat you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are" (Galatians 4:12). St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some" (1 Corinthians 9:22). Paul sought his neighbor's salvation. It didn't matter who the neighbor was. He sought their salvation. And he did whatever was necessary to bring the Gospel to them. He encourages the Galatians to follow that example. To be in the Word so that they might reach out in faith to their neighbors. Paul's example is also yours to follow. "Be imitators of me," he said, "as I am of Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1). Paul imitated Jesus so that he might shine the Gospel's Light on everyone. Paul became like the Galatians just as Jesus became like you. Jesus was born in Bethlehem so that He could redeem you with His death. Jesus gave Himself for you. Paul gave himself for the Galatians and every other congregation he planted. So also you should give yourself for your neighbors. And sometimes the biggest struggle is knowing where to start. Start with them and their struggles and build up to Jesus. Amen.
