You might know that Jesus picked 12 people — called his apostles — to follow him, learn from him, and spread his good news. What you might not know is that they were an unlikely bunch! Jesus could’ve included anyone he wanted, but he intentionally called an unlikely and diverse group. Some members likely wouldn’t have associated with one another, or would’ve held prejudiced opinions toward others. But Jesus called this group together because he didn’t just want people to follow him — he also wanted people to become a family with one another! He wanted them to pursue solidarity together. So, we believe pursuing racial solidarity — at church and in our world — isn’t optional. It’s absolutely integral to our mission of being like Jesus. Without it, we will never be deeply formed into the church Jesus wants us to be.
