Becoming Your Own Best Friend

from Divine by Jess Irvine · host Jess Irvine

"The idea of being kinder to ourselves sounds beautiful. But after spending years or even decades fixated on seeing ourselves as something to fix and change; withholding love when we need it the most; being hard on ourselves...doing the opposite and offering love and compassion to ourselves when we need it the most is hard. Love is natural, but it’s not easy if we’re out of practice, with our guard up, and years of trauma built upon what is natural to us at our core. Love is so much more productive in the way of healing and change and transformation. When love is the bedrock for what we offer ourselves and others, magic and connection and healing ensues." The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
