The present tense. The divine name. The words God spoke to Moses from the burning bush.Jesus was not claiming to be older than Abraham. He was claiming to be the God who made the covenant with Abraham. He was claiming to be Yahweh.The religious leaders understood exactly what he was saying. That is why they picked up stones.Today's readings connect this claim to the original covenant. Genesis shows us Abraham falling face down as God promised to make him father of many nations. The psalm declares that the Lord remembers his covenant forever.
