Before Prince Harry's Spare, There Was King Charles's 'Memoir'

from Windsors & Losers · host Windsors & Losers

Prince Harry, author of "Spare" and co-creator of "Harry & Meghan" on Netflix, wasn’t the first Windsor to spill the beans in public. There was, of course, his mother Princess Diana’s secret collaboration with biographer Andrew Morton and her infamous TV tell-all with Martin Bashir. But who remembers King Charles’s own attempts to tell his side of the story? Thirty years ago, Charles laid bare the trials and tribulations of being heir to the throne in an authorized 500-page tell-all that could’ve been called “Heir.” The book was followed by a 2.5 hour documentary Charles hoped would endear him to the British public. Instead, there were calls to remove him from the line of succession because of his comments on his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles. This week, Eva and Allie revisit King Charles's own (largely forgotten) foray into oversharing and detail how he actually gave Harry the blueprint for going public.
