President Trump shocked the nation and the world on Friday by launching an opening salvo in a trade war against Canada, Mexico, and China, levying a 25% tariff on all goods from the first two countries (save Canadian oil, which will have a 10% tariff) and a similar 10% tariff on all goods from the third. Pointing towards a national security emergency spurred by the ongoing fentanyl crisis, he invoked authority under 1977's International Emergency Economic Powers Act for the President to institute tariffs.
