Politeness Is a Luxury of CivilizationPoliteness is often classified as a fundamental personal virtue, but from a sociological perspective, it functions more like a high-cost "luxury of civilization." Only when a society attains relative abundance, diminishing survival pressure, and established institutional trust can grace and restraint replace defense and aggression as the default mode of public life. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in highly developed nations, underpinned by three core pillars:A Lowered Need for Survival Defense: In environments characterized by resource scarcity or weak legal frameworks, assertiveness—or even hostility—often serves as the most direct means of self-preservation and resource acquisition. The robust legal systems and social order in developed nations reduce the defensive posture people adopt in daily interactions. When individuals no longer need to "speak the loudest" or "shove to the front" to secure basic rights, courtesy finds the breathing room to exist.Freed Cognitive Bandwidth and Emotional Resources: Politeness demands time, patience, and emotional regulation. Yielding to pedestrians, maintaining personal space, or repeatedly exchanging "please" and "thank you" in service interactions represent a trade-off against pure transactional efficiency. Only when the pace of society retreats from a zero-sum battle for survival do citizens gain the bandwidth to afford this "emotional cost" that keeps social machinery running smoothly.Boundaries Rooted in Institutional Trust: In mature systems, politeness functions essentially as a boundary-maintenance mechanism. Highly developed countries rely on standardized procedures and norms to resolve disputes, allowing individuals to maintain a safe, comfortable social distance through conventional etiquette without encroaching on others—or fearing encroachment themselves.Viewing politeness as a luxury does not imply that individuals in developed regions possess superior personal morality. In fact, highly ritualized courtesy can sometimes mask social detachment or reinforce class divides. Yet from a macro perspective, the widespread restraint and consideration seen in public spaces reflect the capital accumulation and institutional cushion that a society can only afford once fundamental survival needs are met.The evolution of civilization is the process of turning what was once an exclusive "social luxury" into a public infrastructure accessible to all. When a society no longer relies on aggression to cultivate a sense of security, politeness shifts from a rare privilege into the most visible byproduct of prosperity."Sip & Talk": Casual talks on news, philosophy, AI, and geopolitics, now spanning global finance and frontier science.
