After the Union army had to burn the USS Merrimack when the Confederates took over the shipyard she was at, the Confederates raised what was left of it and used it to build the Virginia. It became most famous for the first ever battle of two ironclads in the world against the USS Monitor at the battle of Hampton Roads.
