Being Aware Of What You Say

from The Big Hearted Podcast · host Victoria Edmond

The Importance of Mindfulness in Communication with Children Communication is an essential aspect of human interaction, and it becomes even more critical when dealing with children. The words adults say can have lasting effects on the psyche and soul of the children they interact with. In this blog post, we discuss the importance of mindfulness when communicating with children. Children are sponges, and they absorb everything that is said to them. Their minds are malleable, and the words adults say to them can shape their beliefs and attitudes for a lifetime. As such, adults must be mindful of what they say to children, even when they think it is a casual conversation. Parents and educators, in particular, need to be careful with the words they use when talking to children. A simple off-hand remark can have long-lasting effects on a child's self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being. A positive comment can uplift a child and give them the motivation to achieve their goals, while a negative comment can shatter their confidence and leave them feeling inadequate. As an example, consider the conversation between my PT and his daughter's educator. He took his daughter to Dreamworld, and they had a great time going on rides. When he dropped off his daughter at kindy the next day, the educator asked if they did anything fun the day before. When he mentioned Dreamworld, the educator replied with a comment about how scary the rides were, projecting her own fears onto the child. The child was excited about the experience and had not considered the rides to be scary until the educator mentioned it. This shows how easily adults can unintentionally shape a child's perception of the world around them. Adults need to be mindful of what they say to children. Mindfulness means being aware of the impact of our words and actions on others. It means taking the time to consider what we say and how it may affect the children we interact with. Adults need to create a safe and positive environment for children where they feel valued and appreciated. By doing so, we can help children grow into confident and well-adjusted adults.
