Being Human - A poem to remind us who we are
from A Functional Approach with Dr. Jim Chialtas · host Jim Chialtas, DACM, L.Ac.
In this 93rd episode, I share a poem called "Being Human" by Naima Penniman. I thought of this poem over the weekend while on a short getaway with my wife in Joshua Tree, CA. It was a weekend of relaxation, celebration, contemplation, and nature. At one point in our conversation, my wife Debbie mentioned that it can be such a curse to be human because we seem to have so much internal chatter in the background of our thoughts that isn't always supportive. I think that we can all appreciate the tendency to self-criticize and doubt something about ourselves. The same cannot be said for the family dog who tends to live a life of presence in the moment. A quintessential Daoist of sorts, not burdened by the little stuff, not concerned about appearance, and overjoyed when an unexpected treat may pass his or her way. So I share this poem because it works as a wonderful reminder that you are really no different than the rocks, the leaves, the clouds, and the mountains discussed in this poem. As humans, we tend to let the "monkey-mind" run wild at times. This is of course okay in small amounts if it helps us create positive change. But it is equally important to remember to accept what is, who you are, and what you stand for. If we can be our authentic selves we will find our people, our communities, our belonging. And as a result, we will be happier and healthier.
