I am a wife to Grey Msonthi and we have two children a boy aged 17 and a girl aged 15. I was born in Malawi and have lived in the UK for over 20 years having trained as a registered nurse working in London. Here I share my experience of being diagnosed and living with secondary breast cancer. I was 44 when I first faced breast cancer. I found a lump, went to my GP and was referred to the breast cancer clinic. Unfortunately, after all the tests I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had surgery and radiotherapy then went back to work a few months later. Sadly, 18 months later I started to experience pain in my hip and after a bone scan, I was told that the cancer had spread to my pelvis. I was treated with radiotherapy and monthly injections. But, in June 2020, I received my third cancer diagnosis after a regular scan, this time in the liver. I had surgery to remove the affected part of the liver and six cycles of chemotherapy. I am so grateful to God and for all the support from friends and family. I want to make my own cancer journey a positive/ hopeful one by sharing my experience and raising awareness about breast cancer in my community. I want to be the voice that prompted someone to check their body and remained hopeful when faced with a challenge. I want to let people know that they should seek help and advice when they are concerned about their health. Even if I help just one person that will make me very happy and this message would have been worthwhile ABOUT THE HOST Alex is a prize-winning chartered accountant with experience in financial markets from trading finance, capital hedging, structural foreign exchange and interest rates to operational risk from the world’s top financial and advisory institutions including Deloitte, RBS and JPMorgan Chase Alex has been involved in property development programmes across different types since 2008, building and managing a portfolio that includes standard buy-to-lets, student accommodation and other houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs).
