Beitzah 38: Peer Review
from Talking Talmud · host Yardaena Osband & Anne Gordon
R. Abba left Babylonia for the Land of Israel, and he prays that he (and his words of Torah) will be well-received. When he sits among the sages, they discuss our mishnah (from the previous daf). And the notion that secondary ingredients can be nullified with regard to carrying, etc. But the other sages do laugh at him. The question of what can be nullified depends on whether the different items of are the same type of thing or not (min be-mino). The Gemara does not explain why which ingredients should be negated/nullified, and which should not. Also, a carcass raises similar questions of what is negated and why - also raising the matter of the impurity of an animal that is not slaughtered correctly. Each case unto itself - the Gemara is not finding comparable cases by which to establish the halakhah. Even when the case includes issues of mixtures, the Shabbat boundary, impurity, and more - all in one case.
