Zu Beginn der Corona-Pandemie gab es keine Medikamente gegen Covid-19. Die Forschung setzte auf Repurposing, also den Einsatz von Mitteln, die ursprünglich gegen eine andere Krankheit zugelassen waren. Nach der Pandemie müssten die antiviralen Medikamente, die erfolgreich waren, nun eigentlich weiterentwickelt werden. Virologe Ralf Bartenschlager setzt auf so genannte Breitbandvirostatika , die gegen eine Vielzahl von Erregern wirken: "Also ähnlich wie bei der Antibiotikatherapie.” Doch Pharmaindustrie und staatliche Forschungsförderung wollen dafür kein Geld ausgeben. Das sieht bei der Impfstoffforschung ähnlich aus. Dabei könnten die mRNA-Impfstoffe optimiert werden, was Haltbarkeit, Lagerbedingungen und Impfreaktionen angeht. Und Wissenschaftler sagen: Man sollte keinesfalls nur auf ein Prinzip setzen. Der Marburger Impfstoffforscher Stephan Becker hat schon viele Ausbrüche erlebt und ist pessimistisch, “weil einfach das Geld nicht da ist”.
