It depicts the Byzantine general Belisarius, who heroically defeated the Vandals in North Africa in AD 533–534 on behalf of Justinian I, and (according to an apocryphal account probably added to his biography in the Middle Ages) was later blinded by the emperor and reduced to begging for alms on the street. David exhibited the work at the Salon of 1781 at the Louvre after returning from Italy and it proved a great success. It is now in the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille. A second, reduced version was displayed at the Salon of 1785 and is now in the collection of the Louvre. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:22 UTC on Monday, 1 June 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Belisarius Begging for Alms on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @[email protected] check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Justin.
