Beloved Physician by Edgar Allan Poe — A Surviving Poem Fragment for Marie Louise Shew

Edgar Allan Poe’s “Beloved Physician” survives as a fragment honoring the tireless care of Marie Louise Shew. Its brief lines linger on an unsteady pulse, devotion through long hours and the exhaustion of someone who keeps giving. Henrique Couto pairs the reading with a childhood memory of discovering Poe at his school library and carrying that new fascination into a gathering storm. This short literary episode offers a quieter corner of Poe’s work: gratitude, vulnerability and the presence of a caregiver, rather than the machinery of a conventional horror tale.
