Ben Brink - Some Fresh Air
from Audioteca Fotográfica · host Isabel Hernández
I started this photographic project by having to drive along a stretch of road called Waterfall Way on my way to university. The route runs from the east coast of New South Wales to a small town called Ebor in the northern tablelands. The small towns along this road give me a feeling that I can't quite articulate in words, and this feeling was the catalyst for me to start taking photos along this road. One day, I passed a man standing on the porch of his house wearing a bright green shirt and an old cowboy hat; his face was narrow and drooped in the middle like an axe. When I saw him, I felt something that made me stop the car; we talked in a dimly lit room and drank rum with his wife, who was hooked up to a respirator. Looking at them, I understood that there was something beautiful and sad in them; that first meeting was the beginning of our friendship. After meeting them, something changed, and a great curiosity was awakened about the lives of the people I came across. That made me stop in all these villages, gas stations and bars to talk quietly with the locals. This project made me take a walk and get some fresh air on my way to the university. https://www.instagram.com/ben.r.brink/ Text: Ben Brink Voice: Marcus O'Donnell (AI) + info www.audiotecafotografica.com
