Beneath the Surface

This powerful message takes us beneath the surface of our lives using the vivid metaphor of an iceberg - where 90% of what truly matters remains hidden from view. We're challenged to examine what lies beneath our visible behaviors, particularly focusing on anger as a window into our hearts. Drawing from both Proverbs and Jesus' teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, we discover that our outward expressions are merely symptoms of deeper heart issues. The wisdom literature calls us to be slow to anger, not because anger itself is always wrong, but because it reveals underlying pain, fear, hurt, disappointment, or unmet expectations that we've been carrying. Jesus takes this even further in Matthew 5, connecting anger to murder and showing us that He's less interested in managing our behavior than transforming our hearts. The profound truth emerges that conflict doesn't create what's in our hearts - it simply reveals what's already there. We're invited to move beyond surface-level religion and self-improvement to receive what only Jesus can give: a complete heart transplant. This isn't about working harder to hide our struggles or becoming better at appearing spiritual. It's about surrendering everything - past, present, and future - to the only One who can search our hearts, examine our minds, and give us new hearts of flesh to replace our hearts of stone.
