Fowler reports that the Bengals and Turner are not close to reaching a contract extension, making it increasingly likely that Turner will play the 2026 season on the final year of his rookie deal. That is notable because Turner has developed into an important piece of Cincinnati’s secondary. The 2023 second-round pick is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and the Bengals have already seen enough from him to view him as a potential long-term starter. Turner’s current deal carries a relatively modest 2026 cap charge of about $4 million, according to Over The Cap.  The bigger story, however, is what could happen next offseason. Fowler believes the franchise tag could be a legitimate option for Cincinnati if the two sides remain apart. The Bengals have used that strategy before, most notably with safety Jessie Bates III in 2022. Fowler specifically pointed to that situation as a potential blueprint for Turner.  For the Bengals, the franchise tag would provide another year of control and prevent Turner from simply walking into unrestricted free agency. But it would also come with a potentially massive price tag, particularly if the cornerback market continues to rise. Cincinnati could therefore find itself choosing between paying Turner now, paying him considerably more later, or using the tag as a temporary solution. From Turner’s perspective, playing out his rookie contract could also make sense. A strong 2026 season would put him in position to enter free agency with significant leverage and potentially command one of the league’s larger cornerback contracts. Ultimately, Fowler’s report suggests that the Bengals have a decision looming rather than an agreement imminent.
