Send us Fan MailBeowulf is an anonymous Old English epic of about 3,182 lines, preserved in a single damaged manuscript (the Nowell Codex, British Library Cotton Vitellius A.xv) copied around the year 1000, though the poem itself was likely composed earlier, most often dated between the eighth and early eleventh centuries. Written in alliterative verse and set in sixth-century Scandinavia—among the Danes of Heorot and the Geats of what is now southern Sweden—it tells of the warrior Beowulf, son of Ecgtheow and nephew of King Hygelac, who slays the monster Grendel and Grendel’s mother and, decades later as an aged king, dies killing a dragon.
