Bergamot: A citrus fruit that inhibits the same enzyme as statin drugs

Bergamot contains brutieridin and melitidin two flavonoids that competitively inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, the exact same enzyme target as atorvastatin (Lipitor), simvastatin (Zocor), and every other statin. No other citrus species has these compounds. And they come from one 100-km stretch of coastline in Calabria, Italy.
