Bermuda’s Cooperative Revolution

Bermuda’s economy is getting a major upgrade with new laws designed to officially recognize cooperatives as their own legal entity, complete with a dedicated Registrar of Cooperative Societies to support and oversee them. This bold move aims to diversify the economy, empower Bermudians through shared ownership, and reduce reliance on imports by tapping into sectors like farming, green energy, and tech. Rooted in the island’s proud history of mutual aid groups, the legislation modernizes outdated rules to fit today’s democratic, member-run businesses — positioning Bermuda as a trailblazer for cooperative growth among small island nations.
