Bernie’s Last Call: A Missionary’s Story of Faith, Loss, and the Light of Jesus Christ

from Echo Valor Podcast with David Burnell · host David Burnell

Some people enter our lives for only a short time, yet leave an impression that remains with us forever. Bernie was one of those people. In a small coastal community in Nova Scotia, a young missionary encountered a man whose body carried the scars of terrible suffering, but whose heart remained open to the healing power of Jesus Christ. What followed became one of the most sacred and unforgettable experiences of David Burnell's missionary service. It began with darkness. It continued through faith. And it ended at a graveside where sorrow and peace met. In this deeply personal episode of Echo Valor with David Burnell, David shares the true story of Bernie, a humble man he met while serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pictou, Nova Scotia. Assigned as a young district leader after only a few months in the mission field, David faced the challenges of serving in a community where missionary work had made little progress. Then, during a disturbing experience late one night, David and his companion encountered what he describes as a powerful and unmistakable manifestation of spiritual darkness. The experience frightened them enough that they left their apartment and did not return until daylight. When David contacted his mission president, the counsel was straightforward: fast, pray, remain obedient, and dedicate their living quarters. They followed that direction. The experience taught David a lasting lesson about the protective power of obedience, prayer, faith, and priesthood authority exercised in humility. A few weeks later, while going door to door, David and his companion knocked on Bernie's door. Bernie had suffered devastating burns after entering his burning home to rescue his children. His injuries had left him with extensive scars and a need for medical compression clothing. His personal life had also been marked by separation, hardship, and loss. But beneath those visible and invisible wounds, a man was willing to listen. As David and his companion taught Bernie about Jesus Christ, the restored gospel, the Prophet Joseph Smith, and the Book of Mormon, something extraordinary began to happen. Bernie recognized the Holy Ghost's influence, and his faith began to grow. The Book of Mormon's promise in Moroni 10:5 became deeply meaningful: "And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." For Bernie, those words were more than scripture. They became a personal spiritual experience. Eventually, Bernie chose to be baptized. No impressive chapel or large congregation waited to receive him. The small branch consisted of only a handful of faithful members. He was baptized in a cold creek near Pictou, where they had to remove rocks from the streambed to make the water deep enough for immersion. It was a simple setting for an event of eternal importance. For David, watching Bernie emerge from the water was a powerful witness of the Savior's love and the gospel's ability to bring hope to lives marked by suffering. But the story did not end there. More than a year later, near the conclusion of David's mission, he received a telephone call from his former companion, Elder Birch. His friend was crying. Bernie had been killed. While cutting a Christmas tree in the hills, Bernie had parked his small diesel Volkswagen Rabbit along the road. A logging truck struck the vehicle, killing him. The news brought grief and heartbreak. David had witnessed Bernie's spiritual transformation. He had seen the hope the gospel brought into his life. Now that life had ended unexpectedly. Near the conclusion of his mission, David returned to Pictou and felt impressed to visit the local cemetery. He did not know where Bernie had been buried. After praying for guidance, he drove through the cemetery and stopped near a grave where workers were installing a headstone. It was Bernie's headstone. There, beside the grave of a man who had become so important to him, David knelt, prayed, wept, and thanked Heavenly Father for the opportunity to have known Bernie and helped bring him to the waters of baptism. What began with a frightening experience of spiritual opposition had ended with an extraordinary witness of God's mercy and love. Bernie's Last Call is not simply a story about missionary work, conversion, or an unexpected death. It testifies that no life is beyond the reach of Jesus Christ. Drawing on his personal experiences and faith in the restored gospel, David reflects on the power of obedience, the Holy Ghost's guidance, the importance of spiritual courage, and the eternal significance of helping even one person come unto Christ. It reminds us that service is measured not only by how many people we reach, but by the love and faithfulness we bring to those in our path. This episode is especially meaningful for missionaries, returned missionaries, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and anyone who has experienced grief while holding to the promises of the gospel. We may not know how much time we have with someone. But we can make that time matter. Bernie's physical wounds remained visible throughout his life. His personal circumstances had brought great suffering. Yet through faith in Jesus Christ, he found hope, belonging, and the blessings of a sacred covenant. His life ended far sooner than David ever expected. But his story did not end in darkness. The light of Christ had reached Bernie. And that light became a testimony David would carry for the rest of his life. This true account is also included in David Burnell's book BUILT BY FIRE: Hearing the Voice of God in the Flames, a collection of personal experiences exploring faith, sacrifice, spiritual guidance, and the refining power of adversity. Darkness may press against us. Sorrow may visit without warning. But the light of Jesus Christ can reach places we once believed were beyond hope. And that is why Bernie's story deserves to be remembered. Honor. Courage. Purpose. Support the show For more information, please visit www.echovalor.com
