Bertie's Ride follows fifteen-year-old Bertie Chetwynd, who slips away on his pony through deepening Christmas Eve snow to fetch candles for the family tree and — secretly — a letter for his lovesick Cousin Mildred. When his pony throws him and vanishes into the storm, the whole household plunges into dread.
