Local Midlands non profit, FoodShare South Carolina, has been awarded a five-year grant to improve South Carolinians’ access to fresh, healthy food as a step toward decreasing the impact of diabetes in the state. The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation awarded a total of $11.6 million to four organizations as part of Diabetes Free SC, an initiative to address disparities in diabetes care. Recognizing a healthy diet is essential for the prevention and management of diabetes, Diabetes Free SC will provide support for FoodShare South Carolina with the goal of ensuring access to fresh fruits and vegetables to all the citizens of the state.
