Beyond Me, But Not Beyond Us
from Pastor Jonathan’s Sermons Hosted by jonathan althoff
Connect with me here in text… tell me where you are listening. If you’ve been trying to carry life like it’s a solo sport, this message confronts the myth of self-sufficiency with something better: belonging. Starting with Father’s Day, we name a truth every parent recognizes. Kids learn “mine” fast, and nobody has to coach them into selfishness. The real work of formation is helping a child, and every adult, move from me to we. We walk through Ecclesiastes 4: “Two are better than one,” not because the individual has no value, but because isolated living is fragile. God’s design has always been relational. Before sin ever entered the story, God said something was “not good”: aloneness. That matters in a culture that celebrates independence, fences, and private struggles, because Scripture keeps calling us back to connection, partnership, and shared strength. Then we anchor the theme in 1 Peter 2:9–10, where Peter speaks to believers under oppression and gives them collective identity language: chosen generation, royal priesthood, holy nation, God’s special people. We explore why the church is meant to be a family, not a room full of strangers, and why spiritual growth, endurance, and mission often happen through an us. We also get practical about the burdens that feel too heavy alone: parenting, marriage, grief, hardship, and serving our community. If you’re ready to stop living as an “I” when God is inviting you into a “we,” listen all the way through and take the closing questions seriously.
