“Beyond the Surface”

Aug.6, 2026 Daily Devotional: “Beyond the Surface”1 Samuel 16:7 "But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'"  We often live in a world that values appearance, achievements, popularity, and status. It's easy to believe that our worth is measured by how we look, what weown, or how others perceive us. Yet God reminds Samuel—and us—that His standards are completely different. People often choose based on what is visible; God chooses based on what is true. He is more concerned with who weare becoming than with how we appear. That truth reminds us that a sincere, humble, and obedient heart is precious to Him. When Samuel was searching for Israel's next king, he assumed the strongest and most impressive-looking son of Jesse would be God's choice. But God chose David, theyoungest shepherd boy. While others saw a shepherd, God saw a heart that loved, trusted, and sought Him. This verse invites us to examine our own hearts. Are we more concerned with impressing people than pleasing God? Do we judge others by what we see on the outside instead of recognizing the value God has placed within them. The central message is- God evaluates people by their hearts, not by their outward appearance. God isn't saying appearance never matters; He is saying that a person's inner character matters far more than external qualities. God sees every hidden motive, every quiet act of faithfulness, every tear, every struggle, and every sincere desire to follow Him. Even when others overlook you, God never does. He is shaping your character long before He reveals your calling. Am I more focused on my outward image or my inward character? Are there people I have judged by appearances instead of seeing them as God does? What areas of myheart do I need to surrender to God today? Today, ask God to create in you a heart that reflects His love, humility, and obedience. Rather than focusing on outward success, pursue a life that honors Him from the inside out.
