Bhopal Disaster - Part 3: The gas escapes and the city awakens to catastrophe

Just after midnight, the air in Bhopal began to change. People awoke coughing, eyes burning, unable to breathe. But there was no fire, no explosion—only a cloud of poison rolling through the city’s narrow streets, silent and unseen. The worst industrial disaster in history was unfolding as most of Bhopal slept.The release of methyl isocyanate from the Union Carbide plant did not arrive with a dramatic bang. Instead, it spread with terrifying speed, starting just after midnight on December third, nineteen eighty-four. Within minutes, the neighborhoods closest to the plant found the air itself had turned against them. Official and scholarly accounts differ on the precise moment and concentration, but all agree on the immediate impact. People who had been asleep woke to burning eyes, gasping lungs, and a panic that moved faster than words. In Jayaprakash Nagar and other settlements near the plant, families ran into the darkness. Many could not see; the gas blinded as well as choked. Some tried to flee toward the railway station, to higher ground, or simply away from the plant. But the cloud was heavier than air. It hugged the ground, following the contours of the city, trapping people in their own neighborhoods.
