Bhopal Disaster - Part 4: A city overwhelmed and the urgent search for answers

Dawn revealed the scale of what happened. Bhopal’s streets were crowded with the injured, the lost, and the grieving. Hospitals overflowed. The city’s ordinary routines had collapsed under the weight of a disaster no one expected. Now rescue, confusion, and the first steps toward accountability began.Hamidia Hospital, the city’s public medical center, became the epicenter of emergency response. Victims arrived by any means possible—rickshaws, bicycles, on foot, in the arms of family or strangers. People staggered in blinded, coughing, unable to speak. Doctors and nurses worked without sleep, improvising treatments for symptoms they had never seen on this scale: burning eyes, breathlessness, collapse. There was no established protocol for a mass exposure to methyl isocyanate. Staff rinsed eyes, gave oxygen, and recorded what they could. Triage replaced every normal plan. The first challenge was simply getting the living to care. Neighbors carried neighbors, because there was no official warning, no coordinated evacuation.
