Who is the smartest programmer you have ever worked with and why?Costas Anastasiou, software developerAnswered May 29A developer I worked in my previous job was the smartest person I have ever worked with. Let’s call him Jon.Jon was hired 4 years after I was. He is 5 years older than me. His brother was working with us at the time, another very clever person. He would tell us that Jon is much smarter than him. I thought he was just praising his older brother.Jon was hired along with 4 others. This group of 5 was one of the best hires we ever made. All of them were fully functional by the end of the 6 month absorption period, but Jon easily outshone them all.Jon learned around 80% percent of our huge, complex system in less than 6 months. I left the company after almost 7 years and had hardly learned less than half of that (and I was easily above average in that company). He not only learned the business though. He could code almost immediately using our languages of choice. He would improve performance of pieces of code. He would propose methodologies to improve readability, scalability and maintainability. Whenever I discussed an issue with him, he understood my query from the first and almost immediately proposed solutions. If he didn’t know, he took a couple of hours and came back with solutions. All these while he was able to lead a team of 6, correct bad design from the top level designers, communicate with our competitive QA testing department (very few people could communicate well with them), communicate with other departments (and sometimes fix their mistakes!). In addition to all that, he was an awesome guy, mentally balanced, with a great sense of humour and a great father and husband.A programmer who is also a good manager, good with people and without big eccentricities? He is a very rare fruit indeed.
