In October 2016, Bianca Rudolph and her husband, Lawrence “Larry” Rudolph, traveled to Zambia for one of the couple’s many African hunting safaris. Larry was a successful Pittsburgh-area dentist, and the Rudolphs had spent years traveling the world in pursuit of big game. But on the final morning of their trip, Bianca was found inside their hunting cabin with a fatal shotgun wound to the chest. Larry told authorities that Bianca had accidentally discharged the weapon while packing it away. At first, her death appeared to be a terrible hunting accident. But there were questions. Questions about the physical evidence. Questions about Larry’s insistence that Bianca be cremated. Questions about the millions of dollars in life insurance policies on his wife—and about another woman waiting for him back in the United States. That woman was Lori Milliron, an employee at Larry’s dental practice with whom prosecutors said he had maintained a longtime romantic relationship. After Bianca’s death, Larry collected approximately $4.9 million from multiple life insurance companies. Federal investigators eventually concluded that Bianca hadn’t accidentally killed herself at all. They alleged Larry had murdered his wife, staged the shooting to resemble an accident, and then cashed in on her death. A federal jury agreed, convicting Rudolph in 2022 of murder and mail fraud. He was later sentenced to life in federal prison and ordered to pay nearly $4.9 million in restitution. Milliron was separately convicted of being an accessory after the fact, obstruction of justice, and perjury and received a seventeen-year federal prison sentence. The case continued through the appeals courts, but Rudolph’s murder conviction was upheld by the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in September 2025. In January 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court denied his petition to review the case.
