Bible Discussion: David and Bathsheba

from Evansville Congregational UCC · host Congregational UCC

One thing that makes the Bible different from most religiouswritings is that it has no heroes.  King David was the most revered ruler in Old Testament history (actually, in any history).  Yet, he had an affair with Bathsheba, ordered his generals to put Bathsheba's husband (Uriahthe Hittite) into battle where he would be killed and took Bathsheba as one of his wives.  To make matters even worse, a baby born to David and Bathsheba (not the one conceived in the affair) went on to become King Solomon, of wisdomfame.  So, in a very real sense, they were rewarded for theiradultery.  This is probably why, in Sunday School, we teach about David and Goliath, not David and Bathsheba.
