The Holy Eucharist is Jesus Himself. Jesus, the Living Lord, is 'truly, really, and substantially' present through the Holy Eucharist. The Real Presence of Jesus is described as Jesus is present in body and blood, soul and divinity. The entire Person of Jesus Christ is present. If all these statements are true, can there be a greater gift? I don't think so. That, why St. John Mary Vianney (1786-1859), the Patron Saint of all Priests said, "There is nothing so great as the Eucharist. If God had something more precious, He would have given it to us." The Holy Eucharist is the greatest gift because through this God-becomes-one-with-us. That's why it is called Holy Communion. St. John Mary Vianney is the Patron of all the Priests. He is a model for caring for the People of God, converting them to bring them Home to God. He changed the loveless Ars to an ideal parish. The Holy Eucharist was the primary source of strength and the Blessed Virgin Mary was the help. The Saint took the words of Jesus in the Holy Bible very seriously. Jesus, on His discourse on this Greatest Gift, said, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you." (John 6:53) Did Jesus use these words as a symbol? Definitely not. Jesus did use it literally. Because many people hearing this teaching left him and never followed Him again. Even then, Jesus didn't change the language. The Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood are interdependent. One cannot be without the other. As we thank God for the Greatest Gift of the Holy Eucharist, let's also pray for our Priests!
