Our journey ended when the mental illness that appeared when he hit puberty led him to commit suicide at age 20.The story I share highlights the need for adult/child mentorship, and how those relationships change both the child and adult. It also calls attention to the challenges family and friends face in dealing with serious mental illness.For many kids who are in single parent homes, foster care, or incarcerated, there is a need for adults (especially men) to step forward and volunteer as mentor/friend.
