The first reported sighting was by two young couples who claimed to have seen a terrifying figure while driving through the woods in the "TNT area" in mid-November 1966. The creature was described as being six to seven feet tall, gray with a collar, and having large red eyes the size of baseballs. The couples said the creature followed their car, rose up like a helicopter, and was able to glide. The local press picked up the story, which caused panic in the town and led to the birth of the Mothman legend. Other reported sightings of Mothman include lurking outside homes, chasing cars, and stealing pet dogs. The Mothman myth has since grown to include sightings in other parts of the United States and internationally.
